A tribute to the nomadic soul, to the spirit and art of the circus tradition
Cirque Du Soleil have been amazing audiences worldwide for more than two decades, and Varekai is their most dazzling show yet. It centres on the Greek mythological character Icarus, who flew too close to the sun and melted his wings that were held together with wax. In this reimagining of the story, instead of drowning in the Aegean sea, Icarus falls into an exotic forest, filled with wonderful plants and bizarre animals.
Various circus disciplines are on full display including aerials such as straps and hoops, to precision such as juggling and the aptly named Icarian games. Thirty performers guide you through a spectacular choreographed tidal wave of vibrant colours and music, filled with an array of swings, trapezes and hoops. The costumes designed by Eiko Ishioka are a technical marvel - Lycra bodysuits adorned with the most flamboyant head dresses and designs imaginable. And of course, it wouldn't be a circus without some clowns as well.
Varekai first opened in Montreal in 2002 and has now toured every continent in the world (apart from Antarctica, natch. They'd freeze!), playing to an estimated six million people. Make sure to catch it when it plays in , , .
