It's very rare that any form of music transports the listener to outer space, but English composer Gustav Holst did just that in his majestic orchestral suite The Planets. Experience its cosmic sonic celebration of the celestial bodies during the Colorado Symphony Orchestra's Holst The Planets program, which features the ensemble's music director Andrew Litton on conducting duties and Russian-American piano virtuoso Natasha Paremski, as well as performances of Walton's Crown Imperial and Prokofiev's Second Piano Concerto.
Holst's symphonic blockbuster first premiered in 1918 and was received with such rapturous acclaim that it is still sampled by the likes of John Williams and Hans Zimmer today. The seven-movement suite depicts each of the planets in our solar system known in Holts' time and personifies them with their astrological traits. Timeless, otherworldly and simply a must-hear of the classical lovers' live concert bucket list, this is one for the ages.
